Some of Charley Harper's work only exists now in print. Once There Was a Field was produced to be used as a full page spread in Ranger Rick magazine. Pomegranate needed a version of this work that was at least three times the size of the magazine spread.
As this work was a combination of painted grass leaves and screen-printed flowers and animals, it required a combination of Photoshop and Illustrator.
The image I had to work was a photo (not a scan) of the spread that had been poorly lit and partially Photoshopped to hide the gutter. The elements to be vectorized were created in Illustrator. The photo was painstakingly manipulated to remove to remove the artifacts of the original four-color print, increase the resolution as best as possible, even out the lighting, and remove the original copy. Then the elements that were to be replaced with vectors were "erased" along their edges, and repairs were made to the previous Photoshoping. The vectors were then added to the raster background. Finally, a version was also created with a canvas overlay to marry all the elements.
One advantage of the vectorized elements was the ability to move some elements from unused portions of the original to balance the image.
