Pomegranate makes a series of puzzles featuring Charley Harper's work. In this instance they wanted to use his mosaic currently installed at Miami University in Cincinnati, OH.
This posed a few problems.
First, the photographic image was only a quarter of the size necessary for the requirements. Second, the glossy nature of the tiles and environmental lighting cause considerable issues with the image. Third, the mural had been moved in 2018 and several tiles on the top and bottom were now covered with a frame.
It was decided that a vectorized version would be much easier and more versatile than trying to edit the original photograph, and less expensive than rephotographing it with no assurance the problems would be solved.
Below you can see the process involved creating the vectors on a grid for precision, then overlaying lines to create the grout.
The new image stands as a master of the original and allows the Studio to utilize the work and the individual parts however they see fit.
